RAK Center for Outdoor Comfort (RAKCOC), a joint initiative between RAK Municipality and AURAK, focuses on practical applied research on outdoor comfort in the Middle East region. The Scientific program of this feasibility period primarily aims to support adopting outdoor thermal comfort solutions in Ras Al Khaimah and the region through modeling testing and implementing activities that provide various services, such as design advisory and guidelines, education, testing, etc.聽

In its development strategy, the Center plans to expand its scope to adjacent fields such as micro-climate management, climate change adaptation, outdoor landscape design, urban heat island reduction, Nature Based Solutions (NBS), and others as may be relevant.

Vision

RAKCOC is the first center in the Middle East to focus on a better understanding of the richness of microclimatic characteristics in outdoor urban spaces and the comfort implications for the people using them.

By controlling sources of discomfort, sedentary activities, as well as the use of public transport, cycling, and walking, are promoted. The ultimate goal is to create thriving spaces that attract and accommodate a substantial number of people.

Mission

RAKOC attempts to understand the thermal conditions outdoors. Models are currently unavailable for hot and humid countries, and solutions still need to be well-designed. There needs to be a greater understanding of the physical and human parameters in these spaces and the subjective responses of end users.

The center also relies on research based on feedback from facilities equipped with instruments and long-term monitoring.

Our Team

The center鈥檚 establishment is a recent development, bringing together a dynamic interdisciplinary team comprising AURAK and RAK municipality members. The center is situated within the AURAK campus (Building K) and is a hub for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The interdisciplinary team primarily focuses on harnessing their expertise in measurement and modeling. We have formed valuable partnerships with esteemed organizations such as RAK Academy, RAK Hospitality, RAK Properties, and Marjan Island, who contribute to our collective efforts.

In particular, the Engineering School of AURAK actively participates through the involvement of the Architecture Department and Mechanical Engineering Department. Their engagement ensures a comprehensive approach to address the center's objectives effectively.
