
Mr. Tawfiq Abu Hantash
Associate Professor of Architecture Design, History and Theory. Advisor to the President for Campus Development
Cofounder and principal designer at GDAR (Group for Design and Architectural Research) which was established in Amman on 1991 and has offices in Palestine, UAE and Morocco.
Tawfiq holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from MIT 1989 and a BS from the University of Jordan1983.
Through his long and diverse experience in architectural design and teaching, Tawfiq and the team of GDAR have developed a design approach that mediates between modernism and cultural commitment to place and context. This 鈥渆xperimental鈥 approach has been explored through working on complex projects ranging from single buildings to large scale urban design and housing schemes in different places such as Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, UAE and locally in Jordan. This approach has led to winning the Islamic Architecture Award of Cityscape Dubai in 2006 for the design of Princess Salma Housing Estate. Other projects and competitions have been recognized and mentioned in many publications.
Individually and through GDAR, Tawfiq has participated in numerous architectural competitions and won prizes in most occasions. He is a regular visiting critic of graduation projects in local and regional universities. He holds the rank of a CONSULTANT Architect which is the highest professional rank worldwide. He is also an active member of several professional and academic committees and societies including:

Beside his teaching appointment as an Associate Professor of Architecture at AURAK, Tawfiq maintains the position of the Advisor to the President for Campus Development. This position involves offering technical expertise with respect to the planning, architectural and engineering design for the master plan of the university as well as following up with consultants and contractors who are handling the execution of the master plan and the different buildings of the university.
Currently, Tawfiq is managing the team of faculty and students at the 大发快三官网 University of Ras AL-Khaimah (AURAK) who will build a Zero Energy House for the prestigious international competition of the Solar Decathlon Middle East SDME 2018 which will be held in Dubai on November 2018. AURAK鈥檚 team was selected amongst other 22 universities from all over the world to design and build this Zero Energy House which should introduce innovative designs and solutions for both passive and active design aspects of this house.
Last December 2016, Tawfiq presented a paper titled: Learning Sustainability: Traditional Architecture Revisited in the 5th international conference ZEMCH 2016 (Zero Energy Mass Custom Homes) which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between 19 鈥 23 December 2016. The paper will be published in the conference proceedings.
